Contemporary Rear Garden

My hampshire clients had recently had a new fire pit built but there were no other features in the garden and it was unplanted.

Several mature conifers provided screening on the northern boundary but took up a lot of room. They wanted me to transform the garden into somewhere they could relax and entertain, with a smaller lawn and wanted the feel to be contemporary in style.
Usually the starting point for any garden design is the house but in this case the fire pit was the dominant feature, and its unusual shape needed careful integration into the garden design.  I came up with two layouts.

Option 1 was still based around a circle but a path took you up the garden to a second sitting area under a timber pergola.  Box balls and a spherical stone water features continued the circular theme.

Option 2 was based around curved borders that created a ‘y’ shaped lawn and lead down to a deck and triangular shade sail that echoed the triangular shape of the fire pit.

The clients preferred the more flowing garden design of Option 2.  The garden is due to be built in 2013.
